HAY, ANYONE FOR CAKE?
Improvements in the care of rabbits over the past few years have given us more of an understanding of how diet affects our rabbits health, whether it be with regards to teeth, guts or the ever dreaded fly strike. So it is no wonder that we are now seeing special treats based around hay being produced by the larger food manufacturers.
Oxbow and Burgess, to name but two, produce hay cakes so that even those of us who do not want to risk our rabbits health in our times of weakness, or when being out-stared until we give in, can give our favourite little fluff balls their own cake.
You should be able to obtain these treats from rabbit friendly vets or pet food shops who take rabbit care seriously and if they do not stock them they should be able to order them in.
Although keeping a few of the complete food pellets back for treats is a great idea, having special hay cake treats means no longer feeling guilty when us humans have a chocolate cake treat.
We are pleased to share our knowledge and experience with others in order to promote the care and welfare of rabbits, but if you suspect that your rabbit is unwell then you should seek qualified veterinary advice immediately.
